Growth and responsibilities of Italian organic production

The Consorzio il Biologico newsletter is an opportunity for an overview of the situation as regards Italian organic production.

Let’s start with President Nori by summing up the data: according to the latest estimates, organic produce sales have increased by 20% also in 2016.
For several years now there has been a double-digit growth in turnover for organic products. These positive figures
apply both domestically – in Italy the percapita expenditure on organic products is still low compared to other countries, and to foreign countries. After the United States, Italy is the largest exporter of organic products; also here, for 2016, a 20% surplus is estimated, with total exports of around two billion euro. It is worth noting that this trend was never affected, having always successfully counteracted it, by the long economic recession which has had – and is still having – such a strong impact on food expenditures.

Every year the main goal is to confirm and consolidate these trends. Where will the main efforts be directed by our industry?
Substantial growth inevitably entails great responsibility. Our industry needs to make improvements, or at least to
keep up the quality of its services but addressing a wider audience. Our main goal will therefore be to streamline facilities and organisation, making sure that these energies are supported and not wasted. In a nutshell: there’s little time to celebrate and plenty of work to be done. The Consorzio is committed to promoting, disseminating organic production and – of course – participating in trade fairs and conferences.

What are the main events scheduled for 2017?
First of all, as usual, there will be Biofach in Nurnberg in February. We will have two spaces: one at Vivaness with cosmetic companies and the large food area with about 40 companies, plus one restaurant offering Mediterranean organic cuisine specialities cooked by our chefs. Later in the year we will be at Cosmoprof, the international cosmetics exhibition which will be held in Bologna from 17 to 20 March, with a stand dedicated to organic and natural cosmetics. A similar exhibition, although from a pharmaceutical standpoint, will be Cosmofarma, also in Bologna from 5 to 7 May. In April, from the 9th to the 12th, we will be in Verona for Vinitaly where we will be presenting organic wined. Then, during the month of May, we have Macfrut, the fruit and vegetable show in Rimini from the 10th to the 12th, with an exhibition and conference area dedicated to organic produce. Finally, going towards the autumn, there will be SANA, the organic and natural exhibition, in Bologna from 8 to 11 September, and Anuga, the biennial food trade fair, in Cologne from 7 to 11 October.
